Revision of EN-12641 requires recertification of side curtains

Specifically for vehicles with a reinforced body structure, the EN 12642 (known as ‘Code XL’) was developed. Curtainsider trailers that apply to this norm are suitable to carry load form-fit without the use of additional load securing equipment – as described in its certificate. In addition, the side curtain needs to be conform EN 12641 to be used for intermodal (road/train) transport. Usually these powerful side curtains can be used as replacement in order to fulfill the Code XL-requirements and provide a load securing capability. There has been an update in the norm, which affects the certificates of new produced side curtains. Let’s break it down and explain the different aspects:

EN 12641 and Daimler 9.5

The European Standard EN 12641 specifies the minimum requirements for the strength and attachment of side curtains used on trucks and trailers for road and road/rail combined (intermodal transport) traffic. Daimler 9.5 is an even higher standard compared to the EN norm, which ensures the curtain can withstand higher forces. According to specified tests, the curtain is exposed to certain forces and other factors. An approved side curtain allows the customer to safely operate it for intermodal or Daimler transport.

Revision of the norm for side curtains

Transport is always in motion, which require to revise the norm for side curtains according to the latest technical standards - as the EN norm has been introduced in 2002 and not been revised since 2007. The aim of the revision is to increase safety, effectiveness and harmonize the test methods (static and dynamic testing).

Certificates before 2020 no longer valid for new side curtains!

The EN 12641 has been revised in 2020, certificates issued earlier are no longer valid for new produced curtains! Without a valid EN 12641 certified curtain, the trailer does NOT meet the requirements for intermodal transport or Daimler 9.5.

Roland has adapted to the latest revision of the norm (and in addition to Daimler 9.5) by recertifying our products. This is an ongoing process, as new components are permanently developed and tested and ensures we can offer our customers curtains that always match the latest requirements.

If you order a new Roland EN 12641 side curtain, you can request the certificate through our customer service. This official document you can show to low enforcement or police during a vehicle check or inspection to proof conformity.
